30 Abril 2012
Hola Familia Tew!
How`s it going?  I live in the land of Pineapple.  I want to comment on your letters, but first I have something funny to tell you.  Yesterday we went to El Eden three times yesterday.  The third time the neighbor of one of our investigators (that`s hopefully going to get baptized this Saturday) gave us two huge HUGE pineapples.  It`s about a 25 minute walk from his house  to La Borgoña and there`s two big hills.  haha.  So we basically went on a hike with two pineapples!  Saturday we went to El Eden and I came back with two mangos, an avacado and a pineapple in my backpack.  WE have some sweet investigators in El Eden.  I`m going to tell you about them in a minute.
Mom - I really enjoyed your letter.  I got two dear elders last week.  One took 12 days to get here.  That`s about the fastest I`ve seen.  It sounds like you`ve been having a good time having people over and doing stuff for English class.  Ipm sure the missionaries are really glad to have you!  Did Eduardo and Esperanza get baptized?  Say hi tothe Spanish group for me!  The hymn sing sounds fabulous.  I may have almost cried when I read that no one sings in the house anymore.  But that sounds great.  Tell the Caprons and the Robbins and the Binghams I say hi!  And also tell Dale Helfer that I say hi!  What is Andrew up to?  Is he on his mission?  I miss the Helfers.  And EVERYONE in gillette.  Love to all!
Dani  don`t get to wild out there in New York!   Congrats Doug for finishing!
Scotty, Happy Birthday my little dragon friend.  Please don`t eat my mother.
Kevin  Good job finishing your written qualifiers!  Woo hoo!  I bet you did really well!  Congrats!
Dad,  Wow sounds like the missionaries in the stake are on fire!  That`s great!  And rabbit food sounds delicious!  Awww... singing in the living room!  Sounds fabulous.  Congrats on all the great things that are happening.

Well, we are teaching two cool families that live out in El Edén.  One is Rafael.  He has to get married to his compañera, and we are going to find out wednesday if he can get married this Saturday.  Miracles happen because he was scared about getting married before.  We went with Elder Tencio, our district leader one day because we didn`t know what else to do with him and Elder Tencio just talked to him about their goals as a couple and Rafael started talking about having fresquito... well basically punch in the house one day, and I was like, wait... are we talking about a wedding?  YES!!!! Woo hoo!  So, he wants to get married.  The cool thing is that he was praying for strength to resist temptations and stuff and a few days later the missionaries found him.  He prays like grandpa Tew, because he really talks to God.  When we first met him, I didnt think he seemed that interested or positive, but he has a lot of faith, and he wants to follow Gods commandments.  He is a really neat guy.
We are also visiting a family where the mom`s sister is a member.  They have four kids.  Two of them came to church with us this Sunday.  Its amazing how receptive kids are to the gospel.  They recognize good.  They want to be good. Joselyn and Luis came with us.  They called us (minutes are expensive here and people don`t call unless they need to) at 6 50 yesterday morning to make sure that we were going to come pick them up.  She is reading her book of mormon!  They both want to come next week, even though primary was crazy!!!!  They were all ready when we went to pick them up.  They were dressed up in their nice clothes and had their hair all done nicely.  Hopefully they can get their parents excited about church too!  They are miracles!  I love little kids.
The people here are very receptive.  They are more humble than the people in Masatepe, generally speaking.  I love my area and Im trying to have more faith that we can baptize a lot here and that the branch can grow into a good ward.   I`m also tryign to have more love for the people.  A lot of the time I just want to tell them theyre wrong, so patience is important too.
I love you all.
Love, love, love, Hna Tew
ps how is mary katherine doing?

23 April 2012
Hello Family,
WRITE ME PLEASE!!!  I`m dying to hear from you all.  I`m in the Borgoña with Hna Silva, she was my Latina companion in the CCM in Guatemala!
Love, Mb

Hey Family
here are two pictures of Claudia and Enrique.  They are great.  I`m still praying for them!  They talked to us about saying no to coffee and cigarrettes at work before I left.  Enrique always asked people when they are going to get baptized.  I know they`re going to help the missionaries in Masatepe with references!  and noww........
I`m in La Borgoña!!!! Wow!  It's about 30 minutes away from Masatepe.  It`s kind of a suburb of Managua.  We live by the highway.  It`s not as city-y like Masatepe.  The houses are more humble.  There are mountains and it`s breathtakingly beautiful.  It`s also somewhat fresco!  yay!  My emotions are definitely connected with the heat, so I am very grateful to be able to in a cool area.  Part of our area is far away, we searched for an investigator in El Eden for four hours last Thursday.  haha. We eat lunch at a fritanga, a restaurant. Carne asada, tajadas, ensalada,  We eat dinner with the family Narvaez and they are super pilas!  They have helped us go to Eden everyday because they say that it`s really dangerous.  I don`t know if it`s really that dangerous, but they help us.
I am here with Hna Silva. She is from Guatemala.  My thrid compañera Guatemalteca! WE were interchange companions in the MTC in Guatemala.  So we ate together and we slept in the same dormitory.  She`s great.  Every companion is more and more like me. She`s very happy and easy to get along with. She`s also very obedient!  We are reopening the area.  There were two elders in the area before and now there are hermanas!  The elders left us with lots of investigators!  It`s kind of fun to reopen because neither of us know anything.  We live in front of the church.  It`s a branch that has been around for about a year and a half.  We talked to the president of the rama for about 2 hours yesterday.  He served in Guatemala North.  Hopefully we can work a lot with him and with the members.
I am trying to get used to La Borgoña and Hna Silva and everything.  It`s hard to leave behind an area.  It was really painful to say goodbye to the people in Masatepe.  I love them so much.  When I was saying good bye to Claudia and Enrique, Rodrigo was going to say the closing prayer but he didn`t want to because he said that he was embarrassed (tenia pena) because he was crying.  So Enrique prayed and it was so beautiful!   Junior said thanks for teaching my family the gospel.   It was really hard to say goodbye, and it`s a little hard still.  but, I am glad to be in the Borgoña.  It`s very different from Masatepe.  It`s montainous and most of the streets are dirt.  There aren`t any pharmacies or grocery stores or markets.
It`s super beautiful here.  There are a ton of pineapple! Fields of pineapple!  yum!  Mom, I got the package!  thanks.  I liked the stickers, loved the m and ms and the anti bacterial stuff.  I would like some bandaids.  I got the picture letter with pictures of when you were in New York.
The investigator that we are visiting that lives a little far away, in El Edén is named Rafael.  He is about 70 years old and is a nice guy.  He is living with a member of the church and isn`t sure if he wants to get married.  He came to church this Sunday all by himself.  We just had to call him and he said he was going to show up, and he did.  Early!  He had a baptismal date for this saturday, and we`re going to see what happens. I have faith.

So, thanks for the letters mom.  We just get letters once or twice every month and everyone is always surprised by how many i have.
So I`ve been thinking about the call for Mother`s day, and I`m thinking that I might just want to talk to you two.  I`m a little homesick and I want to be able to talk a little more than I was able to at Christmas time.  I`m going to send my pictures again because I`m afraid they won`t go through.
The other two pictures are me and hna silva and me, hna zapeta, and presidente mercado.
Sometimes I look in the mirror and I think about the white witch from Narnia because I feel so large and white.  But, it`s okay.  I`ll get back to America and feel tan.

I love you all a lot, a lot.  Thanks for everything.  For my birthday it would be nice to have a brown or dark skirt that isn`t very full.  It`s kind of windy.
Love, love, love Marybeth

16 April 2012
Hey the letter I sent you all is from last week.  Sorry, I tried to send fotos but they were too much.  I love you all.  Thanks for writing me.  I haven`t read the letters yet but l and I`ll respond.
I love you all.   ENRIQUE AND CLAUDIA AND THEIR THREE KIDS GOT BAPTIZED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  And I feel really happy because I love them a lot.

Hey family,
Can you tell me what`s happening with Pablito.  It sounds like something good happened but I don`t know what news he has.  But I want to know in the next 25 minutes.
Hey everyone,
Dad congrats on finishing the conferences.  Congrats on the missionary moments.  The books sound great.
Mom sounds like English class is still going well.  Tell the missionaries hi.  Good job working on the house with Dad
Doug and Dani good job on your tests!  That`s great.  I`m excited to hear about where you end up.  I like the plan of leaping to Wyoming.  I`m glad the munchkins are doing well.  Send me a picture of David.

Well,  Enrique and Claudia got baptized and confirmed!  Kevin, the boy that got baptized last week got confirmed.  It was branch conference and our branch is bigger than all the wards in the stake haha.  But we`re still a branch. It was cool to see Enrique sustaining the prophet and the quorum of the 12 apostles and the ward leaders.  COOL!  We have seen soooooo many miracles with this family.  God definitely wanted them to get baptized.  We found out that Enrique found out that one of his friends at workis a member and has a son on the mission in Argentina.  His friend asked him if he was going to get baptized and Enrique said yes.  The friend at work apparently helped him a lot.  ANSWER TO PRAYER!!!  We went to visit Claudia Satuday morning to make sure everything was okay. She made us lunch )rice, beans, avacado the size of my foot and boiled platano.  We left at about 1 50.  enrique has to work Saturdays and he told us that he wasn`t sure when he was going to get back maybe 4 30 at the latest.  The baptism was a 5.  We were leaving the barrio and he came up on his motorcycle!!!!  yes!  early!  We asked him how he felt.  (alegre). and he said there was enough time to bathe and freshen up.  miracles!
They weren`t at the church at 4 50 so we went to their house.  They were still getting ready.  We left on foot  and Enrique followed a few minutes later with Saeed on his motorcycle.  Claudia doesn`t like to ride right now because she`s pregnant.  He passed us on the motorcycle (this is progress because before we had to wait for him at the door of the church)  The four elders took all the clothes and went into the bathroom with Enrique, junior, Rodrigo and Saeed.  (Hey!  They all had white ties to get baptized with). Claudia changed into her dressed.  When Enrique came out in his white pants and shirt and tie he had the biggest smile on!!!!  I`ve never seen such a big smile on his face.  We took a ton of pictures.  They are a good looking family.  They got baptized one by one (Rodrigo 3 times and Claudia twice).  Claudia left to change but Enrique stayed in the font to see his wife and then his sons get baptized. We have a picture of the four males on the steps of the font.  Salvage!  After we played some games with everyone and had refreshments.  The family sat on one of the church benches waiting for us and Enrique had his arm around Claudia. I`ve never seen that before! :)   Rodrigo made the cross sign in the water before getting baptized because he thought it was funny.  Rodrigo has made progress like crazy.  He loves to read the scriptures!  And last week in FHE he was praying and he was about to end but then remembered... thank thee that my family is going to get baptized all together this saturday and it`s going to be a very special day because we`re all going to do it together.  He asked that the family of the world be blessed.  He has learned how to forgive and the whole family has a much happier feeling between everyone.  Enrique doesn`t nag the kids or call them necios so much and the kids have a lot more respect for their parents.
The next morning we left the house at 7 00 because we had to get our investigators and Claudia and Enrique in the church at 8 30 because I had to play the piano forthe choir.  So we left on splits.  I went to Claudia and Enrique`s house with Diane, the sister of william, winston, esau, and jacob. There`s never light in the house (electricity).  And yesterday morning there wasn`t any water either.  They iron the clothes by heating the iron on the gas stove.  and they ran out of gas!!!!  no electricity, water, or gas!  It was actually a blessing because no one had to shower (they said that it was okay because Rodrigo se bañó three times yesterday haha),  President Mercado, the branch president, sent a white shirt with us for Enrique and we also brought ties.  I had to tie the tie for Enrique because he forgot how.  With a little craziness they entered the church with white shirts.  They looked so good!  And happy!   When President announced that the family was going to receive the Holy Ghost, starting with Enrique, Enrique moved his hymnbook to the side and looked around for a minute.  He went up there and I was behind the piano, but Hna Zapeta said that there wasn`t a more beautiful sight that Enrique up on the stand with his head bowed.  Enrique said the closing prayer in the Principles of the Gospel class!  woo hoo!
Well, I`m probably leaving Masatepe, but we haven`t heard yet.  I`m almost sure.  I have the full 6 months.
We found out that a reference wants to get baptized.  His name is Daniel Aleman. It`s a good story pero ya me voy.
I feel so happy that Enrique and Claudia got baptized!!!!!!!!!  I love them!  And they really are starting a new life.  Their sons are going to be AWESOME missionaries.  We also found a cool family this past week.  He is a member and she isn`t.  their daughter came to the baptism and really liked it.  We`re going to see what happens!  Also, one of our converts who hasn`t come to church in a long time came to the baptism.  Well, I`m doing good and I`m praying for you all.  I `m praying that Doug and Dani find a good job in the place they`re supposed to be.
I love you all a lot!  yesterday I called Hna Xiomara Mom, in English.  Está rico, Mom I said.  She didn`t notice.  haha.  But I love my real mom a lot more!
Love love love, Mb

9 April 2012
Hey Family,

Thanks for the letter Dad and Dani.

The rest of you, write me please!
Mom, can you send my letters to Mary Katherine?  MK can you send my letters to Regan?

Love, Hna Tew

Hey there folks!

Dad, congrats on the success you`ve been having with the temple goal! Good job working on the house too,
Mom, speak Spanish everyday with Dad.  Just do it!  Good luck with the English classes and say hi to the Popes and the Carrolls and Lucia and Bartolo and Laritza and everyone in Gillette!
Dani, thanks for the emails.  Sounds like you all are getting ready to leave the east coast!  I hope you find a great job for Doug.
Doug, good job on your tests.  I heard they went well.

I can see the Big Dipper and the Southern Cross every night. Also, I`m pretty sure that I see the Lion and maybe the centaur???  I`m pretty sure about the lion.
I survived the Semana Santa.
We`re going to have branch conference next week and I`m playing the piano for the choir.
We`re eating mangos!
I`m 99% sure that I have changes next week.  ¡Ya me voy!
I love Masatepe.
Eddy`s dad gave me a bag of three types of leaves to make a tea for my cough.  It was pretty nasty, but it felt good.
Hna Zapeta has a profesy that when I finally fall, it`s because I have transfers.  She has fallen about 3 times and I still haven`t fallen once.  I just slide all over the place but I don`t fall.

Well, everyone got interviewed last Friday for their baptism.  Junior, Rodrigo, and Saeed passed.  So did Claudia and Enrique.  I don`t know if Elder Blandin interviewed Enrique or just checked up on a few questions.  As we were walking out of Colonia Taiwan Elder Blandin told us that in Saeed`s prayer he asked God to bless Elder Blandín, Hna Tew, and Hna Zapeta.  And he thanked God that his family was going to get a true baptism in the true church.  whoa!   He`s a crazy kid and the spittin image of Enrique.  Saeed is 8!  He`ll be 9 the 25th of April. Rodrigo has questions about the things we teach and he always wants good answers.  Junior just believes.  He believes everything we teach.  And it`s easy.   Enrique has lots of good questions and he likes to see his answers in the scriptures.  He`s a good guy. Please please pray for them!  Pray that they can get baptized this Saturday and that they can feel the Spirit!  Pray that nothing will impede them, nothing bad will happen to them.  Claudia already knows everything becuase she was baptized about 17 years ago but there is no record.  We went to their house last night with William, Esau, and Jacob Lopez.  William always helps us a ton.  He must have been a really good missionary.  Esau is my brilliant piano student and Jacob is his twin.  They are 15 and they bore their testimonies about being obedient to their parents.  Rodrigo and Saeed really paid attention when they were talking.  It was cool.  The Lopez family is pilas!
Kevin, a nine year old got baptized last Saturday ( two days ago).  We taught him in a week.  His mom is a member, she was a little less active but started coming about a month or two ago.  I don`t know if I told you but we went to theri house to check on a reference (who we found yesterday SUPER drunk) and she told us that her son wanted to be baptized and she didn`t know what to do.  Bueno, nosotros podemos ayudarle, hermana. :) It was fun to teach him.  He`s super shy, but he just believed everything we taught.  And he kept all his commitments.  He prayed and he felt good.  He read the book of Mormon and he believed it.  We told him that it`s a commandment not to drink coffee and he didn`t ever want to drink coffee again.  Children have more faith, or something.  Junior has a ton of faith, and he`s really helping his family.
Well, I hope everyone is doing okay at home.  I hope you`re feeling good Paul.  I hope your job is going well
Pictures:  me and a tootsie roll.  That one´s for you, Dad
Us and the Lopez family
Masatepe missionaries and Pres. Mercado
Kevin`s baptism

Well, pray for Enrique and Claudia and their family.  Last night we were telling jokes with them and it reminded me of home!  I feel like I have family here too.  Xiomara is basically my mother.
Love, Hna Tew

2 April 2012
Dear Family,
how's it going?  I love you all!  It's been a miracle week and we're about to start a new one.  Today almost all the mission got together to go to two viewpoints.  One was Catarina, where there is a pretty lake.  And the other was Coyotepe, an old fortress, political prison.  You can see Masaya and the volcano and a lake.  It's really pretty.
This day is hot!  Super caliente! We are melting in our house.  we both have a fan (thank you "the mission") and I've eaten 2 cold oranges from the fridge.  Yum.  I love oranges.
Last night we had a fun activity with a family.  I had this paper that you gave me, mom, nd I wrote the name of every person at the top of a piece of paper.  Everyone passed their paper to the right and we wrote the good qualities of that person on the paper.  Everyone wrote on everyone's paper.  They have three boys and the mom is pregnant with a little girl! How exciting, right?  But they get a little critical sometimes and we thought we would teach them something that could make a difference in the home, something they could see or feel.  We taught them the two big commandments: love God and your neighbor.  The 12 year old (Rodrigo) wrote on my paper "es una persona especial por que ella nos ensena mucho."  He wrote on hna Zapeta's paper that she is teaching their family the gospel.  Yeah! It was fun to write and read all the good things about each person.
9 April 2012
Well family, we survived la Semana Santa.  there is a really crazy tradition here in Nicaragua.  A bunch of jovenes dress up as Jews and run through the streets looking for Judas (another joven)  Judas runs and hides all over Masatepe.  When they find Judas they tie him up in chains and drag him around.  and there is more than one Judas.  Ho do you dress like a Jew? Wear a skirt, put on a mask, and put on a cardboard hat that's covered with brightly covered plastic - the stuff they string up for open houses and car lots.  There were about 500 jovenes dressed as Jews.  junior and Rodrigo went as Jews.  There are also people dressed up at Roman soldiers.  and they run through the streets in two lines.  One side holds one end of a chain and the other holds the other end.  there are about 60 Roman soldiers.  It's pretty crazy.  Well, seeing how it's almost May, I should probably sent this letter off.  Wow, time passes quickly.  It's May 21st.  Hopefully we're going to have a baptism this weekend.  Enrique hasn't drunk or smoked in two weeks.  He is happy.  He still says he hasn't received an answer about the BoM.  He isn't sure if Joseph Smith was a prophet.  But he's going to receive an answer.  Last P-day we went to the chocoyero.  It's a nature reserve.  We didn't see any chocoyos (parakeets) or monkeys.  But we heard monkeys.  It was beautiful.  It reminded me of going on walks with grandma and grandpa Campbell.  I have so many good memories with them.
Well family, I'm going to try to develop more faith and diligence.  we can all change.  Only Satan wants us to think that we can't change anymore.  Of course I would love for you to come pick me up! Love, Marybeth

Hello family.
I am glad to hear from you all always!  I liked your responses to my email, Mom.  Thanks for the picuture letter.  I love them.  The kitchen looks good.  Kevin and Kyle look good.  Nani looks super tall!  I was really surprised.  Also, I could not believe what my room looks like.  I never imagined it was like that.  Whoa.
Doug ' how did your tests go?  Are you enjoying your family practice?
Cheryl, How is work and Relief Society president?  I have laryngitis.  Is there something I can drink or should I just wait?  I´ve got mangos, unpurified water and milk that comes in a box.
Dad, how´s your book going?
Kevin, how´s school going?
Kyle, how´s your team playing? Are you enjoying coaching?  Are you still dating Carrie?
Dani, how´s primary?  I hope you are enjoying whatever class or calling you received.
Pablito!  How´s it going?  How are you feeling?  Are you teaching in church or do you have a calling?  Are you enjoying your work?
Tanner, how are your pet bugs doing?  Name one after me.  I´m super proud of how well you´re reading.
Nani!   How in the world did you get to be so big!??
Scotty, will you draw me a picture?

Did people speak in vos a lot in your missions?  Because here, EVERYONE speaks in vos.  Last week someone talked to me in tu for the first time on my mission.  Actually, hna zapeta talked to me in tu once but it was an accident.  It was super funny.   She asked me, Hna Tew, tienes...  hahaha.  She got confused because of my name.
Anyway, I wrote about two of my favorite parts of the mission in my letter to the president. This week we had a ton of miracles.  We went to visit a recently activated family to check up on a reference, and the mom said, I was just thinking about something last night that I wanted to ask you.  My son wants to be baptized.  What process do I have to go through to help him?  Woohoo!  He´s nine years old and his name is Kevin.   One of our ZLs, Elder Mclaws came to Masatepe to interview Enrique.  We went to Enrique´s house and he wasn´t there.  He didn´t answer his phone.  I thought for a minute that he was hiding from us or something.  We called Claudia and she asked us to go to the church to tell Junior, her son, something.  So, we went to the church.  When we were about 6 feet away from the church, Enrique passed us on his motorcycle.  He was wearing his red helmet.  He stopped and talked to us.  And we introduced him to Elder McLaws.  Anyway, it was a HUGE miracle.  We convinced him and Elder McLaws to do the interview in the church (Where there is actually light!!!! and more chairs!!!)  And I just felt super grateful.  Elder Mclaws told us that he asked Enrique when he is going to get baptized and Enrique told him a date!   enrique has never accepted a baptismal date after the first time that Hna Zapeta put one.  That was a miracle too.  I felt so blessed.  I just wanted to start singing the miracle song from Fiddler on the Roof.  haha
I was feeling super stressed out last night so Hna Zapeta did two things to make me feel better.  She contacted a drunk man and put a baptism date with him and she told the family we were visiting that it was my birthday, so they all sang las manañitas to me.  It was really funny.  Hna Zapeta is great. She´s applying to BYU.
Enrique Sanchez has really good questions.  He thinks about things.  He just needs to do stuff!!  Like have faith, repent of his sins, obey the commandments, and get baptized already!    Bautícese!  or, since we´re in Nicaragua, Bautizate!  I want to practice talking in tu and vos when I get back, Dad.  Are you prepared?
I sawe Sarah Cotton too in the choir. Can you send me her address in the field?  She sent me a letter with her MTC address.
Mom, I would like more stationary
I´m out of time.  Read my email to President.
I love you all!  Have a good week!  Be good and healthy and SHARE THE GOSPEL!

Hola Familia,
What´s up?  Sometimes we talk in English to Enrique´s kids.  This sunday Hna Zapeta asked How are you and got My name is Rodrigo as a response.  It was really funny.
Anyway, here is my letter to President Monestel.  I´m doing good.  I saw all four sessions of conference here in Masatepe.  These are probably going to be my last two weeks in Masatepe I´m guessing.
I love you all!  Thanks for the letter, Mom!  I got your picture letter and three dear elders this week.   Also thanks for the package Cheryl.  I like seeing the pictures and reading what´s going on.  I also enjoyed the paintings and Kanai´s drawing.

A word of advice for everyone:  Write me.
love, Hermana Tew
